Pope Francis has tested negative for the coronavirus. He was tested after having cancelled a Lent retreat for the first time in his papacy due to the effects of a cold he is suffering.
The Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported on Tuesday that the Pope had been tested for the coronavirus in light of his flu like symptoms.
Pope Francis has taken ill at a time when Italy is battling a surging outbreak of the potentially deadly coronavirus with the death toll in Italy having jumped to 52 on Monday. It had been 34 just one day prior. That country’s confirmed cases toll climbed past 2000 this week.
The 83-year-old Roman Catholic leader, who had part of one lung removed because of an illness decades ago, also canceled most audiences last week.
