Port-of-Spain Mayor Hints At Fines for J’ouvert Band Leaders

Port-of-Spain Mayor Hints At Fines for J’ouvert Band Leaders

Port-of-Spain Mayor, Joel Martinez says the Port of Spain Corporation is looking into charging J’ouvert bands that vandalize people’s property with paint and mud during Carnival celebrations.

Speaking with News Power Now this morning, Mayor Martinez said he is looking into charging all mas bands a fine to have their trucks on the road, to cover all costs affiliated with repairs and damages done to private property during Carnival celebrations.

The PoS Mayor said bands that refuse to pay the fee will not be granted permission to be on the road.

When asked if changing the parade route will be an option, Mayor Martinez he will not change the route but try to encourage the mas band leaders to speak to their masqueraders.

Woodbrook residents have complained of defaced walls and damaged property in the aftermath of Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
