Port of Spain Mayor, Joel Martinez, is threatening a crackdown on illegal vending in the capital city.
Speaking with News Power Now, Mayor Martinez said while he understands that these are tough economic times, illegal vending in the city is getting out of hand.
He emphasized that it is an issue that must be addressed.
Mayor Martinez denied that it was a case of picking on the “small man”.
He explained that the Corporation is in support of vendors and entrepreneurs but maintained that he will only support those who do conduct their business legally.
Meanwhile, Mayor Martinez says no discussion has been had yet on the People’s Mall which was destroyed by fire last week.
The mall has been destroyed by fire on several previous occasions, a fact that has not eluded the Mayor who voiced concern about the frequency with which fires have occurred at that site.
However, he described the fire as unfortunate and added that the City Corporation is still awaiting a report on the cause of the fire.
