Mayor of Port-of-Spain, Joel Martinez on Wednesday said he has withdrawn himself from making the decision to have the Christopher Columbus statue removed and will leave the final decision to the government of T&T.

Speaking at Wednesday’s statutory meeting at City Hall, Mayor Martinez said the statue, which was donated to the Capital City in 1881 has over the years, raised a much larger issue regarding the country’s’ past history and its forefathers.

Mayor Martinez said that as a responsible entity he cannot make the final decision to have the statue removed.
He said where the statue rests is not only being occupied by residents of Port-of-Spain but it is a part of the country’s history.
