POS Mayor says he is not aware of calls for Christopher Columbus statue to be removed

Port of Spain Mayor, Joel Martinez stated during an interview with Power102 News, that he is unaware of any movement attempting to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus, situated at Independence square and Duncan Street.

He said that if approached by any organization requesting its removal, his first response would be to question the motive behind such demands.

Campaign Leader of the Crossroads Project, Shabaka Kambon seeks to bring awareness to Trinidad and Tobago about the atrocities committed by some of the nation’s historical figures, who are currently held in high regard.

One of the items on his campaign’s agenda is to advocate for the removal of monuments and the renaming of spaces celebrating Christopher Columbus.

Mr. Kambon believes it is time that Trinidad and Tobago joins other countries across the world in looking to the future rather than living in the past.
