One trade union puts its figure at thousands as it relates to the number of people who’ve been retrenched in the past 6 to 7 months.
The Labour Ministry had indicated that from data obtained, over one thousand people have been laid off from the private sector.
Government has given a commitment to do what is required to avoid job cuts in the public sector.
However, Communication Workers Union President, Joseph Remy said it has been reliably informed that the number of peple laid off in recent time, amounts to around 4000.
He was speaking on the Facing the Issues Programme on Power 102.1fm this afternoon.
The trade unionist also commented on the issue of productivity, adding that reviewing all aspects of operations at the workplace and making relevant adjustments can help improve efficiency.

Government is moving to make amendments to several pieces of labour legislation.
Confirmation of this comes from Labour Minister, Jennifer Baptiste Primus.
She said the action is necessary especially in light of the many changes taking place in the labour arena.
Speaking during debate in the Senate this week, Mrs Baptiste Primus explained that all must be done to ensure labour laws are relevant and timely.
The former President of the Public Services Association also indicated that consultations will be held with stakeholders in this area, to get their input and recommendations.
