In a News Power Now interview yesterday, Mr. Matthews stated that the San Fernando City Corporation informed his union that the corporation has no money, and therefore is not in a position to continue paying the more than 300 casual workers.
Mr. Matthews lamented that this is the first time since 1976 that the Corporation has not taken on fortnightly workers, and expressed his concerns about the Corporation functioning effectively without them.
He says that the Corporation’s approach is a wrong one, because in times of recession it is the duty of the state to provide as much employment as possible, in order to keep money circulating in the economy.
He went on to call on the government to release funds to the San Fernando City Corporation so that it can run its affairs.
