Police are today continuing investigations into the death of a two-year-old girl following an altercation between a member of the Trinidad and Tobago regiment and a civilian. The soldier has since been arrested. It is alleged that he shot two people, including the child who subsequently died at hospital.
The child’s uncle, has also suffered gunshot wounds but has received treatment. News Power Now understands that the soldier had gone to visit his child at St. Paul Street in Sangre Grande when he was prevented from doing so by the child’s uncle. An argument erupted and amid a heated verbal exchange, it is alleged that the soldier drew his service firearm and opened fire against the man. It is alleged that the child who was being held by another person, was struck while that person attempted to run for cover. The soldier is said to have fled the scene following the incident, however the swift action of officers of the Valencia Police station, led to his arrest. He was handed over to officers of the CID at the Sangre Grande police station where he was interrogated.
Police are continuing enquiries.
