Luis Suarez has been banned from all football for four months and from international football for nine matches.

The Uruguay striker will play no further part in the World Cup following his bite on Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during his side’s 1-0 win, which saw them reach the last-16 at Italy’s expense.

But he will also be unable to play club football until October 26, ruling him out of nine Premier League and three Champions League games with Liverpool next season.

However, FIFA said the ban would not prevent any potential transfer if Liverpool decided to sell the 27-year-old.

Liverpool chief operating officer Ian Ayre said the club would take their time before commenting on the ban, telling the official website: “Liverpool Football Club will wait until we have seen and had time to review the FIFA Disciplinary Committee report before making any further comment.”

The Premier League Player of the Year has also been fined just under £66,000.

A statement from FIFA read: “The player Luis Suarez is to be suspended for nine official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on June 28, 2014.

The punishment also prevents Suarez from attending matches during the period of the ban.
