THA project flagged

by | Aug 8, 2014

NEWS GRAPHIC 10Projects being undertaken by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) have come under heavy scrutiny by the public and the Central Government.

The projects include the Shaw Park Muticultural Complex and also the Scarborough Library.

This issue of cost overruns as well as upgrade work to the Chief Secretary’s residence in Lowlands is a t the center of concerns that have been raised.

Initially Chief Secretary Orville London informed the media that upgrade works were being done to the age old building and it would cost the THA $1.5 million.

However just before the Eid holiday, Infrastructure Secretary Gary Melville revealed that additional works were done to the building which would have driven up the cost from $1.5 million to $5 million.

This new information did not auger well with the Tobago community.

This is because while money was being spent on refurbishing work on the Chief Secretary’s residence his temporary home was being funded by tax payers, at Plantation Villas in Lowlands at a cost of $35, 000 a month for a period of 9 months.

Added to that, public servants and suppliers were not paid in a timely manner.

Questioned about the drastic increase in cost of the Chief Secretary’s residence Mr London did admit that there was some disconnect between the initial cost and what was done to the structure.

However he does believe it was justified.
