The Union officially opened its Unemployment Bureau in Couva yesterday.
Speaking with News Power Now, President General Nirvan Maharaj stated
that the service is free of charge to the national community. This initiative
is said to aid in the alleviation of predicament of many who have been
unemployed for some time as well as those who have been recently retrenched.
Although the bureau existed many years ago, it had initially only catered for workers of the now defunct Caroni (1975) Limited. The
union leader added that the current service caters not only for the ex-Caroni workers, but for all and thus it is an expansion of the
bureau.
The Unemployment Bureau is headed by ATGWTU General secretary Rajindra Mohan.
It is more than amazing that a trade union is more progressive than the government. An unemployment bureau is necessary to peruse the employment of the nation. Such an office is able to give the public precise figures of employment. According to the previous statistics which was guess work anyway T&T is having the lowest unemployment rate of the world besides Ghana in Africa.
