The issue of amending abortion legislation in T&T, remains a topic of contention

ZIKA virus' impact on unborn childrenThe Health Minister has emphatically stated that abortion is against the law, however there have also been much debate on the issue of the ZIKA virus’ impact on unborn children.

Former Health Minister, Dr. Fuad Khan has called for the issue to be debated, noting that many young women were making the difficult decision to abort pregnancies without much needed support and health advice. He said it was hypocritical of our society to avoid discussing the reality of the situation.

The Inter Religious Organisation, headed by Harripersad Maharaj has spoken out on the issue. Following a meeting to discuss the prospects of amending the law, Mr. Maharaj told News Power Now that the IRO is completely opposed to any adjustments to the law.

He said despite the former Health Minister’s sentiments that there were many illegal abortions being carried out, the IRO remains adamant that the law of the land should stand as is.
