Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar is today sending best wishes to the East Indian community on the occasion of tomorrow’s Indian Arrival Day Holiday.

In a statement, Mrs. Persad Bissessar said this national occasion reminds us all of the indomitable strength of the human spirit, especially in times of challenges and adversity.

This year, Trinidad and Tobago celebrates 170 years since the first arrival of East Indians to the island.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said that for people of East Indian heritage, it is a moment when the long path through history where people summoned the fortitude to let go of their land of origin, to embrace a new mother country, is remembered.

She said that for people of other origins, it is an opportunity to understand the things that built the foundations of a people arriving in a new land, facing a future of uncertainty.

Finally, the Prime Minister said that as people of Trinidad & Tobago, it is a day that should be recognized for the model nation T&T has become.

This country is a great example of cultural diversity, but the question remains when it will be one united country where people consider themselves as Trinidadians and not as people of different origin anymore.
