The new normal is staying at home. PERIOD. With very little certainty that restaurants, beaches, schools and other public spaces will be allowed to open to the pubic, come May 15th in Trinidad and Tobago, some companies are taking up the challenge to change their ‘normal’ business operations. In fact, several companies have already adopted and established online shopping methods that are working for citizens from East to West, North and certainly South, Trinidad.
One thing that’s certain in these times is that to survive in this ‘new’ world that will eventually be realised post COVID-19, people must be computer literate and technologically astute. Digital dependence now equates to personal independence at a time when online bill payments are the smarter option than in-person transactions, after all, the key measure in global governments’ efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 is social distancing.
In person transactions goes against this measure, in totality. Whether transactions are utility bill payments, the purchase of fruits and vegetables, supermarket essentials, hardware supplies or even toys, books and stationary supplies, some companies in Trinidad and Tobago are showing resilience and foresight.
Chain supermarkets in Trinidad and Tobago are now offering pre-arrival shopping and curb-side pickup via their newly introduced apps. Variety shopping companies too, are doing better digitally, using their Instagram platforms to bring awareness to new options such as online shopping and fixed rate delivery, There’s no doubt that COVID-19 has delivered much more than just illness and death. It just may have introduced a new way of doing things that many people may not have seen coming.
In the United States, a survey done and released in early April concluded that consumers are starting to adopt new behaviors, including shopping on new websites for basics, shopping at new grocery stores, trying curbside restaurants and store pickup, getting groceries delivered, and trying video conferencing for professional and personal reasons. There are several additional categories where consumers are increasing their participation, such as entertainment streaming, e-sports, and online fitness.
