The Minister of Education, Dr. Tim Gopeesingh has initiated legal proceedings in a matter that is said to have stemmed from social media.
According to the Ministry of Education, allegations which began circulating on the social media platforms, indicating that a cheque from Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation, ACER, was given to the son of a government minister, are untrue.
The Ministry, in a statement this afternoon noted that the recipient of the cheque is alleged to be one ‘Shane Gopeesingh’, however, the education ministry denies that Acer corporation has ever been contracted by the ministry for the procurement of laptops for students, since the introduction of the e-Cal initiative in September 2010.
The Ministry says in 2010, the bid for the provision of laptops to Form One students was won by Hewlett Packard (HP) and in the next two consecutive years, students received Lenovo laptops.
The ministry adds that in 2013, the laptops distributed to students were HP and most recently, in 2014, Lenovo was the successful bidder for the students’ laptops.
Minister Gopeesingh has since indicated that he has no relative by the name of Shane Gopeesingh, saying that his son’s name is in fact, Shane Aleong.
