Tobago records first ChikV infection

chikTobago’s first case of the mosquito borne illness chikungunya is confirmed.

The Tobago House of Assembly Division of Health and Social Services says it has since ensured that the patient receive health care and education to manage the virus, which is spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

It adds that the patient has subsequently returned to work, having reported that no one in his household has been or is currently ill with any medical complaints.”

In a statement the Heath Division assured Tobagonians that its strict protocols and operational plans for Chikungunya have been activated and officials are ready to handle such an event.

The Division has also called on Tobagonians to remain vigilant and become proactive in stopping the spread of the virus by keeping their surroundings clean and using insect repellants and mosquito nets.
