This day was first observed on December 3, 1992.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is coordinated by United Nations Enable, which works to support and promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
Persons with disabilities have complained that as a society there have been some issues with respect to Trinidad and Tobago’s provisions for the disabled.
One such individual is Stacy Parris, a disabled 37 year old woman living in T&T.
In an interview with News Power Now this morning, she revealed that while there have been some progress made T&T still had a ways to go in providing for disable persons.
She disclosed that when it comes to maneuvering the nation’s streets its very difficult.
She said that the roads are generally in bad condition and this makes it difficult for persons th wheelchairs or crutches.
Ms. Parris also claimed that when it came to unemployment things weren’t much better.
She divulged that disabled persons just wanted to be treated equally by society.
