There is not enough damage control being done by the relative authorities in the Tourism Sector, to combat the negative publicity emanating from several issues raised in recent weeks and days. This assertion today from President of the Trinidad Hotel Restaurants and Tourism Association, Hassel Thom.
His comment comes in light of the Institute of Marine Affairs 2016 report which highlighted devastating findings that poor coastal development is largely responsible for concerning levels of sewage, particularly on the northwest coast. The report said contamination included seepage from pit latrines along the coast, agricultural run-off and improperly constructed septic tanks.
Mr. Thom said while such issues can be remedied, more needs to be done by the Environmental Management Authority as well.
Mr. Thom said more destination marketing must be done by the local authorities, to market Trinidad in particular.
