Presently Trinidad and Tobago is not a safe place for children.
This is according to the Children’s Authority who has stated that this needs to change.
Recently the number of reported incidents of child abuse has increased.
Meanwhile calls are being made for a change in the minimum marriage age, which now stands at 16 for boys and 12 for girls.
Christelle Germon Deputy Director Care, Legal and Regulatory Services of the Children’s Authority revealed that citizens’ views on children’s needs and their treatment needs to change.
Meanwhile Registry and Investigation Manager at the Authority Rhonda Gregoire- Roopchan stated that persons who deal with children need to be aware of the signs of abuse.
She also disclosed that the Authority had a 24 hour hotline as well as a unit that was charged with the responsibility of responding to abuse.
