Trinidad and Tobago signs arms trade treaty

by | Sep 26, 2014

Arms picOver 90 members of the United Nations (UN) have signed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) yesterday in New York.

Trinidad and Tobago and other signatories will be legally binded to the treaty when it comes into force 90 days later.

This country has been lobbying UN members to have the ATT office located here.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was leading the lobby for the ATT secretariat to be located in T&T.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said an ATT was needed since the illegal arms trade has devastated countries like Trinidad and Tobago, pointing to our high gun crime rate.

Foreign Minister Winston Dookeran said the ratification and signing of the ATT is a landmark event.
