News on Monday that half a million Trinidadians spent a total of $117 million dollars on a record number of visits to Tobago in 2013.

The Tobago House of Assembly says data from tourism associations, flights and ferries in and out of the island indicate that more Trinidadians are traveling to Tobago for quick breaks  and one to three day retreats.

Assemblyman Tracy Davidson-Celestine, Tobago’s  Secretary of Tourism and Transportation said even as her department dedicates time and resources to promoting Tobago internationally, an eye is always kept on the domestic market as they understand just how valuable domestic tourism is for the economy.

She says that with the introduction of the new ferry, Galicia, the Tourism ministry is expecting reduced costs for goods and services which will help make Tobago an even more attractive option for domestic tourists.
