The Ministry of Health in collaboration with Accreditation Canada International (ACI) today launched the Accreditation Health Services Programme.
The service was launched at the Ministry of Health’s head office on Park Street in Port of Spain.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Health Dr. Fuad Khan said accreditation is vital to the development of the Health system.
A contract was signed by the Ministry and ACI in January of this year and work is set to begin next week with ACI visiting hospitals to get a feel of the current system.
Dr. Khan stated the system as it is, needs much improvement.
He added that the Health Ministry is currently paying out millions of dollars in medical litigation because of the shortfalls in the health service.
He claimed that accreditation will help prevent such litigations if implemented.
Dr. Khan is set to take his proposal to Parliament where it will require a special majority to be passed.
