Two grandfathers appeared in court today to answer to various sexual assault charges against female minors. This follows extensive investigations conducted by officers of the Child Protection Unit (CPU).

In the first incident, a male relative of an 11-year-old female victim reported to Northern Division CPU officers that, while passing by a bedroom window, he allegedly observed his brother sexually abusing their niece.
WPC Alleyne of the Northern CPU launched an investigation into the report where she unearthed that the victim’s grandfather had also allegedly been abusing her since 2016.

The men, ages 59 and 35, were arrested on Friday and will answer to the several sexual assault charges when they appear before a Sangre Grande Magistrate.

In another incident, North-Eastern CPU officers were made aware of an alleged assault of an 8-year-old female victim. This assault too was reportedly performed by her grandfather. According to the victim, while having a shower, her grandfather came into the bathroom and proceeded to sexually assault her. W/Cpl (Ag) Williams took lead into the enquiries and arrested and charged the 77-year-old suspect on Saturday. The accused was charged with one count of sexual penetration of a minor and will answer when he appears before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate today.
