The Secretary-General,Ban Ki-Moon, of the United Nations has issued condolences on the death of Norman Girvan.
The Secretary-General is grateful for Prof. Girvan’s contribution to the United Nations good offices process between Guyana and Venezuela. The progress achieved during his tenure was acknowledged by the Heads of State of Guyana and Venezuela and is part of his impressive legacy.
According to the UN, Prof. Girvan was one of the most distinguished Caribbean scholars of his time. He was particularly devoted to the promotion of regional integration in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Accoding to the UN this commitment earned him the respect and admiration of the entire region.
Norman Girvan died in Cuba on Wednesday, three months after he became paralyzed following a fall while hiking on the Caribbean island of Dominica. He was 72.
We have lost a truly great man. I send my deepest solidarity and respect to his family. We had corresponded for five years and I learned from him constantly.
