Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar is stressing the importance of education as a pillar of national development.

The Prime Minister was speaking on Monday at the sod turning ceremony for the South Campus of the University of the West Indies in the Penal/Debe area.

Stressing government’s commitment in achieving 60 percent tertiary-level education for the population of this country Mrs. Persad Bissessar said this figure now stands at 42 percent.

The Prime Minister added that the UWI South Trinidad campus would specifically serve the educational needs of persons who live in the southern parts of Trinidad.

She also spoke on the possibilities of this campus being limitless.

Also speaking at the sod turning ceremony for the UWI South Campus was Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim who announced that the El Dorado Youth Camp will be reopened.

Minister Karim said the youth camp would be turned into a training academy for nurses

He said it is hoped that this would address the ongoing shortage for nurses in this country.
