According to Minister of Industry and Trade Ms. Paula Goopie Scoon there is a foreign exchange leak, as well as the number of the cars on the roads, were some of the issues that were taken into consideration when decisions were made on the industry.
She said that while Government realized that the changes would affect both dealers and consumers, she was of the view that it was still a viable industry.
She made the comments on the Power Breakfast Morning Show on Power 102.1 fm today.
The Minister also stated that vehicles that were already en route to T&T would be allowed in.
Goopie-Scoon revealed that the Government would have open discussions with stake holders to ensure that decisions made would work for everyone.
Commenting on the Trinidad and Tobago Automotive Dealers Association concerns that they were not consulted on the matter before decisions were made concerning the industry, she said that sometime decisions have to be taken by Cabinet in the best interest of citizens.
