Minister of Trade, Industry, Investment and Communication, Vasant Bharath is throwing his support behind yesterday’s budget announcement of a $500 per month grant, for one year to vulnerable and low income mothers of newborn babies.

Via media statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the minister said the measure is meant to support the alleviation of poverty and give children a better chance at a good future.

He said the measure is not a welfare approach and is not to be construed as providing stop gap measures for more serious problems.

Minister Bharath said the progress of T&T’s people and the country in general, requires careful investment in key areas that provide better circumstances for families.

He said it is part of a broader strategy to live up to the Government’s reputation of keeping its promises.
