Prior to starting his “Great Swim” this morning, THA Minority Leader, Watson Duke told News Power Now that the Coast Guard is constitutionally bound to protect him. His statement came amid much public persuasion by the TT Coast Guard, for him to alter his decision. The Coast Guard also indicated that due to the circumstances and other operational commitments, it would not be able to provide any dedicated resources or give any assurances of a voluntary expedition of this kind at this time.
Duke responded, saying the Coast Guard must protect him. He said even if they didn’t, his journey would be started and completed, regardless.
Prior to starting the swim, he said while many were focused on his physical readiness for the task at hand, he was instead focused on his spiritual and mental readiness to stand with the people of Tobago.
Together with his team, he addressed the media and planted a symbolic fig tree to mark his successful feat.
